Multiple Teams · Olympic Hopeful Inspires CSS Cross Country Runners

Team USA’s Samantha Achterberg, a modern pentathlete, spent an afternoon addressing both the MS and US cross country teams on Monday before practice.  Then the MS team had the opportunity to work out with Achterberg, an Olympic hopeful for the 2020 Games.

“It was really cool to run with her,” added Charlie B. ’25, “and to see how an Olympian trains.”  The Kodiaks found inspiration from not only working out with her, but also from her stories.  This young athlete from Chatfield Senior H.S. in Denver, never dreamed of being an Olympian and considered herself an average athlete who competed in cross country, swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, track, ski racing and horseback riding.

Achterberg emphasized how her cross training in high school served as a catalyst for the Pentathlon, a five-sport event:  running, laser pistol shooting, swimming, equestrian, and fencing.  She leaves for Mexico City next week for the Senior World Championships where she will compete against the premier Pentathletes in the world.   Good luck Sam!
