The dry mesas, fading cottonwoods, and crisp fields of hay bordering Pathfinder Park provided a beautiful backdrop for the combined 2A/3A All-Conference Cross Country meet on Friday. The annual 5K race showcases many of the best runners in the state, all sporting their school colors with pride.
On the girls’ side, Kodiak Kate G. ’20 repeated as 2A Black Forest League Champion crossing the finish line well ahead of her competitors from Peyton and FVS. Teammates Brooke A. ’21, who ran her best time of the season, and Angalina L. ’21 finished 6th and 9th, qualifying for All-Conference. Heather H. ’21 and Hina S. ’20 just missed the podium with 11th and 12th place finishes. Overall, the Kodiaks finished second behind the strong squad from Peyton.
The Kodiak boys’ team finished with its best overall performance in school history. Junior Clay R. led CSS and earned All-Conference with a 9th place finish, and he was closely followed by Orlando M. ’21 and Tyler B. ’19 who missed the podium with 11th and 12th place finishes. Aaron Y. ’21 and Leo G. ’20 ran their best race of the season, both finishing with personal best records.
Assistant Coach Daveed Benson commented, “It was a great day for Kodiak cross country. This was the best team performance by any CSS boys’ cross country team, and to no one’s surprise, the girls ran a solid race again.”
Head Coach Jolly Cunha agreed, while adding that “this team has had to overcome some adversity with injuries, yet they’ve continued to work hard and push each other. They are a great group and we’ve enjoyed our time together as a team.”
