The JV boys’ lacrosse team held on to a 1-goal lead throughout the match-up with the Cheyenne Mountain H.S. “C” squad. Ben M. ’21 led the Kodiaks with 4 goals and 2 assists, followed by Alex S. ’21 with 3 goals and an assist. Senior John N. was solid in goal with at least 6 saves on the night. The Kodiaks are coming together and playing as a team, and according to Ben M., “We really enjoy playing with each other and wearing the Kodiak jersey. It’s fun to be a part of initiating the lacrosse program again at CSS after so many years.”
This year is the first time since 2009 the Kodiaks have supported a high school lacrosse team, mainly at the request of a few student-athletes who petitioned for the sport. Due to a shortage of high school teams in the area, especially for schools similar in size to CSS, we opted to compete on a JV level as opposed to varsity.
Head Coach Roger Tucker stated, “Even at the JV level, it has been a blast coaching these boys and we’re having a lot of fun together. They’re a group of super talented boys mixed in with some who have never played before, and as a result everyone is getting better every day and developing the important skills for the game–which by the way are not easy to come by. I give a lot of credit to our assistant coach and alum, Ian Pelto ’12, who played lacrosse at Colorado College. He brings an enthusiasm and work ethic to the field that helps to elevate the overall practice environment, and he is great at refining the boys’ skills.”
Tucker concluded that “the future for Kodiak lacrosse looks bright with a good number of upcoming players from the middle school program. We lose two seniors but should have some solid replacements next year.”
CSS is back in action next week on Wednesday, May 1, at Pine Creek H.S. for a 5:00 p.m. face-off. Go Kodiaks!
