Boys Varsity Tennis · Boys’ Tennis Squeaks Past Pueblo County 4-3

Saturday presented the perfect day for a tennis match with blue skies and epic 70-degree weather. The Kodiaks, playing without #3 singles player Ben M. who was away on a college visit, were able to hold off Pueblo County for a 4-3 victory that went down to the wire with three double’s matches.  CSS’s roster was boosted with the addition of Mark M. ’23 from Germany who earned the #1 spot.  He and Tristan T. ’23, who plays the #2 spot, are both 5-1 on the season heading into Regional play this week.  They both won hard-fought matches against the top two players from Pueblo County. Tristan went 6-2, 6-2 on the day while Mark came back after a 2-6 first set to win with 7-5, and 6-3 sets.

The Kodiaks are back in action Monday at Pueblo East for a 4:00 p.m. match.  Regional play begins on Thursday at Cheyenne Mountain H.S. with winners continuing play on Friday. Fifth year coach Marc Knutila stated, “This win against Pueblo County, a very strong program, was the first in my years of coaching at CSS. From top to bottom, this is the strongest boys’ tennis team that I have coached as a Kodiak, and I’m excited to see what they do at Regionals this week. It’s unfortunate that our season was so compressed and a loss in Regional play automatically ends a player’s season, but the boys have maintained a positive attitude and have made the most of the shorter season–it’s been fun coaching this group.”
