Before the CSS boys’ soccer team took the field on Wednesday, a day after a disappointing 1-2 loss at Rye, the Kodiaks were focused and intent on a victory. The boys in blue warmed up under a sunny sky with a sense of urgency, understanding the importance of this matchup with Dolores Huerta, a team that earlier had defeated CSS 2-4 in Pueblo.
From the start it was obvious that the teams were well matched. The first goal came from freshman Diego A. as he found the net off a sharp assist from sophomore Henry G. The ball was crossed about 10 yards out from the goal when Diego secured it and connected in midair for a direct hit to the corner. Before the end of the half the Scorpions found the goal with a slow roller perfectly placed to the side of CSS goalie Ty W. ’21.
At 1-1 to start the half, momentum swung from one end of the field to the other with aggressive defensive play on both sides. CSS over shot the goal in several attempts, failing to monopolize on created opportunities. As the sun began to set behind the mountains and the temperatures dropped, both teams sensed the urgency as emotions flared and the intensity rose. With 5 minutes remaining, James H. ’22 ran down a wide pass from Kyle J. ’20 along the sideline. Controlling the ball as the defender overplayed his right foot, James took his time and set up for the perfect kick–a left footer just above the hands of the goalie, landing the top corner of the net.
After CSS celebrated the 2-1 lead, they buckled down on defense and held the Scorpions scoreless to win. The victory was important in the TPL (2A) standings, keeping the Kodiaks in the mix for playoffs. The boys play at Heritage Christian on Saturday morning before hosting FVS on Tuesday at 4:00 for an important league matchup. Go Kodiaks!
